Jurassic Park Discovery Center in Islands of Adventure
Interactive activity center
Jurassic Park Discovery Center is located in Jurassic Park, a 21-acre area of Islands of Adventure. Look for a large white building near the water between Pizza Predatoria and The Watering Hole. You can enter through a front door or a back door.
Jurassic Park Discovery Center Attraction Description
The Jurassic Park Discovery Center is a hands-on activity center and educational dinosaur exhibit designed to appeal to both children and adults alike. Activities are spread out throughout the building in a series of rooms/facilities.
The Nursery houses a dino egg incubator as well as a pre-emergent nursery scanner that allows you to look inside the eggs. If you arrive at the right time, you might be able to watch a baby velociraptor hatching. (If the hatching isn't happening while you are there, ask one of the scientists what time the egg is expected to hatch; it usually happens at least once each hour.) Young guests who watch the egg hatch are sometimes given the opportunity to name the baby velociraptor.
The Discover Dinosaurs section allows you to use a machine to scan a large rock wall for fossils. You'll also find dinosaur-shaped kiosks with learning opportunities as well as buttons that can be pushed to hear dinosaur sounds. A nearby DNA Sequencing section lets you mix your DNA with that of a dinosaur's so that you can create a one-of-a-kind saur-sapien. Your genetic material is obtained through a character profile, a brain scan, and a DNA scan. (Germaphobes should bring hand sanitizer or alcohol wipes: the brain scan requires you to put your face against something, and the DNA scan requires you to place your hand on something.)
Other fun activities include dinosaur fossil exhibits, a trivia game called You Bet Jurassic, and animatronic dinosaurs. If you're very lucky, you might also have a chance to see Savannah, a baby triceratops that periodically visits the Jurassic Park Discovery Center.
While visiting the Jurassic Park Discovery Center, you can also stop by The Burger Digs for something to eat. The Burger Digs is a quick service restaurant that dishes up burgers, chicken sandwiches, and related fare for lunch and dinner. You'll also find a shop known as the Dinostore, which sells dinosaur-themed toys, apparel, books, fossils, collectibles, and more.
Jurassic Park Discovery Center History
The Jurassic Park Discovery Center and the rest of Jurassic Park opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999. Parts of the attraction's architecture, including the building's exterior and the three tiki-hut styled roofs, were inspired by the Visitor's Center, an important structure in the Jurassic Park film.
The Jurassic Park Discovery Center is the perfect place to take a break on hot and humid days. The building is generously air conditioned, there's plenty of seating in the restaurant and other areas within the attraction, and you'll find clean restrooms on the upper level.
If you're looking for a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the views, try walking straight out the back door of the Jurassic Park Discovery Center, or take the outdoor path to the left of the building, until you find the terrace between the back of the attraction and the lagoon in the center of Islands of Adventure. This area is one of the most beautiful (and deserted) spots in the whole park.
Review of Jurassic Park Discovery Center
For kids (and adults) who like dinosaurs, the Jurassic Park Discovery Center is a can't-miss attraction that could eat up a couple of hours of time. People with little to moderate interest in the prehistoric will still find plenty to look at (the theming really is great), but should be able to buzz through the whole attraction in 30 minutes or less.
