Review of Sugarplum's Sweet Shop Candy
We've tried a lot of the treats at Sugarplum's Sweet Shop, and there are definitely a few things that we like better than others. Our favorites include the Peppermint Toads, which have a sweet, creamy, minty interior and a dark chocolate exterior. The Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans are also very good; each package contains an assortment of jelly beans. Flavors range from tasty (marshmallow, tutti-fruiti) to strange (sausage, black pepper) to super-gross (bogey, vomit). The packaging is also fun and makes a good souvenir.
Many of the chocolate items at Sugarplum's Sweet Shop, including the Chocolate Frogs, Fudge Flies, Chocolate Wands, and Fizzing Whizbees, aren't terrible, but they would all taste much better if they were made with better quality chocolate. If you don't like cheap chocolate, you are better off sticking with items like Coconut Ice, Lollipops, Peppermint Imps, and Bing Bong Ginger Snaps.
Some of the candy, including the Sugarplum's Lollipops, the Sugar Quills, and the Sugarplum's Taffy, has a generic taste. There isn't really anything special about it. The bulk candy, which is a bit cheaper than the packaged candy, is also the sort of candy you can pick up at practically any candy store. Gummy worms, for example, are sold almost everywhere.
Our least favorite candy at Sugarplum's Sweet Shop is the Exploding Bon Bon. Each bon bon consists of a ball of orange and pineapple flavored popping candy dipped in white chocolate. The center isn’t bad, but the outside is not good. (Note: we aren't fans of white chocolate, which probably helps to explain why we found them so distasteful.) We also try to avoid the Jelly Slugs, which are really hard and chewy and always seem to taste "old" - even when they're not.
The candy is a lot of fun - and the packaging is really cool - but if you want something super tasty, you should head straight to the bakery case and ask for a Cauldron Cake. Each Cauldron Cakes is made from six kinds of rich yummy chocolate and is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth. You should also check out the Butterbeer Fudge, which can only be purchased in the sweet shops in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
