Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show Description

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show is a live-action show that combines comedy, facts, and video-based clips to create an educational presentation on make-up and special effects in horror movies. In the lobby of the showplace, which doubles as a queue for the show, you'll see displays from a number of films, including Psycho and Jaws, as well as displays featuring Universal's classic monsters and Halloween Horror Nights. Guests are then ushered into a small theater that faces a stage where all the action takes place.

The show incorporates three live actors: a host, co-host, and one other surprise participant. Guests are called upon throughout the show to volunteer for demonstrations. The two hosts show you how some of the most common effects in movies are created (blood, knife tricks, motion capturing, etc.) and intersperse the demonstrations with video clips that explain werewolf transformations and other make-up effects.

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show History

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show is one of the oldest shows at Universal Studios Florida. When it opened with the park in 1990, it was known as the Phantom of the Opera Make-Up Show. At the time, it was the only attraction in the Hollywood area. The lobby was decorated to resemble  the Paris Opera House and displayed tributes to Universal's classic monsters and horror giants like Lon Chaney, the Munsters, and Alfred Hitchcock. The lobby has been re-themed since the show's opening, and the show itself has been reincarnated a few times with new clips, scripts, and displays.

UO Fan Guide Show Tip

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show is meant to be funny, not frightening, but the fake blood and other props might be scary for some children, especially younger children who do more looking than listening.

UO Fan Guide Mini Review of Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show

Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show is a must-do for most people. It is probably the best show in Universal Studios Florida (outside of the shows in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley). The three on-stage actors and the high level of audience participation means that each show is just a little bit different, giving it good repeat value. The comedy aspect of the show also kicks up the entertainment factor just a notch. Even if you don't enjoy horror films, you can still find something to enjoy Universal Orlando's Horror Make-Up Show.
